What it means, when AI passes the Turing test

People mistook it for a human more often than the real human.
This doesn’t prove AI is intelligent in the human sense—but it does show how good it’s getting at sounding human.

Remember this guy?

that’s right. It’s Alan Turing.
Back in 1950, Turing proposed a test where if a machine could mimic a human well enough that another person couldn’t tell the difference, it might be considered intelligent.
It’s not a perfect test—but it’s a milestone moment.
So… it happened.
In a landmark study (not yet peer-reviewed, but definitely headline-worthy), researchers tested whether humans could tell the difference between people and AI in a modern spin on the Turing test.
Turns out, they couldn’t.
The Setup
Researchers from UC San Diego had participants chat with two “witnesses”—one human, one AI—without knowing who was who.
Their job? Figure out which one was the machine.
Here’s the twist: one version of the test gave AI models specific personas to adopt (like a culturally aware internet-savvy 20-something). This made a huge difference.
When GPT-4.5 was given a persona, it was judged to be the human 73% of the time—outperforming actual humans in some cases (🫠).
Other models like Meta’s LLaMa 3.1 also held their own (56% success with a persona), while OpenAI’s newer GPT-4o (without persona) only scored 21%.

Cybersecurity: Social engineering risks just escalated. If people can’t tell bots from humans, phishing attacks might get a major upgrade.
Content Creation: AI’s getting scary good at sounding real. Great for productivity… complicated for trust.
We’re not sounding the alarm (yet). Or are we?
